Doug is a badass, pretty much in every way. And he is also my best friend and has been for, well damn, going on 24 years now. Sometimes I try to be like Doug and take life by the horns and have my way with it. Usually I come up short. Sometimes it comforts me to think that if I embrace the idea of not being like Doug, in addition to enjoying the life that hedonism brings, perhaps my buddy Doug can get some vicarious pleasure from me. In that respect, I am selfless. So when Doug asked me to sign up for the Tour de Gila with him, I said "yes....Yes, I will sign up for the Tour de Gila with you." And maybe, possibly maybe, I will also go the next step and actually ride the Tour de Gila. But in line with my thinking that I can be (and perhaps have always been?) the yin to Doug's yang, perhaps a more fitting tribute would be to eat a little chocolate doughnut for each mile that Doug rides at the Tour de Gila. Or most likely yet, I will ride the DAY OF THE TREAD with him, raising money for ALS research, and eat little chocolate doughnuts while doing so. Having my cake and eating it too, if you will. For Doug. Seriously though, I love Doug and I admire the hell out of how he is handling this situation and dealing with this insidious disease. I want to help. And I hope you do too.
